Blap Deli: My Influences

For this weeks guest mix we are excited to welcome Blap Deli.

Beatmaker and Goldie Records founder Blap Deli first started flexing his musical bones playing in various punk and metal bands while growing up in California. It wasn’t until late 2011 that he started to venture into electronic music.

In that short space of time he has managed to rack up a lengthy list of releases, his most recent of which Whisper.Me released on UK label Pragmatic Theory is a dense mixture of kaleidoscopic sounds and one of our favourite releases of 2014 so far.

For his exclusive Beatnik mix Blap Deli has put together an equally diverse mix of his musical influences, which includes everything from The Velvet Underground to Flying Lotus.

“A lot of my selection comes from what I am listening to currently. Even the older tracks by The Velvet Underground and Gabor Szabo, I still listen to currently. I like to keep some vintage sounds in the air for inspiration and sometimes a reminder of what I started vibing on before electronic music came abouts.” – Blap Deli

George Spits: My Influences

This week we are honoured to have George Spits taking up the mix duties.

Hailing from Miami and one third of The Llamabeats, George started making beats and writing rhymes back in 2009. Before that he learnt his trade as a studio engineer for Damian Marley, Nas, and even Lil Jon.

Now now a fully fledged MC/producer his production style is incredibly varied and never really considered a specific genre, although they are usually built around heavy drumbeats. Now six albums in with the Llamas, George has decided to go out into the world on his own with his first solo album Hoodlum. However its still nothing but a musical collaboration between all Llama alumni.

For his exclusive Beatnik mix, Mr Spits has put together a selection of the music that has influenced his sound, both past and present.

“The tracks I chose here are songs that I believe have all in one way or another changed my life. Some changed me in a spiritual sense, and others in a way that caused me to simply create something completely different and new. They are just perfect songs to me and I can truly listen to any of these at any time, and instantly put all my Earthly thoughts and bullshit aside to just enjoy the sound and my current state of mind.” – George Spits

T!BE: My Influences

This week we have a guest mix from T!BE.

Hailing from Montreal Canada, T!BE grew up with music all around him learning to play drums, guitar, bass, piano and saxophone at an early age. It wasn’t until grade 10 that he decided to focus more on electronic hip hop production.

With a rich sound that combines smooth sample chops, glitched out synths and thick drums, T!BE is definitely one to look out for.

For his exclusive Beatnik mix, T!BE has put together a mix of current influences.

“This mix created in Amsterdam, consists of music that I enjoy at the moment, raw tunes and more detailed tunes” – T!BE

Rhodes: My Influences

British singer/songwriter Rhodes offers his Beatnik mix.

Rhodes’ style of folk/pop is moody, mysterious and more often epic. Basically he makes epic sort of grown-up balladry.
We feel in love with his mesmerising Morning EP, we could listen to his gorgeous voice forever. Beautiful tracks like piano-lead ‘Your Soul’ and cinematic ‘Morning’ highlight this young talent from Hitchin in Hertfordshire as one of the most important newcomers in recent years.

The Guardian even compared him as a one-man Coldplay, and having supported the likes of Laura Marling, Nick Mulvey, London Grammar and Rufus Wainwright, make sure you see him live at one of his headline shows soon.

For his exclusive Beatnik Mix he shares his wide influences.

“Here are a list of some songs and artists that have been most influential to me. All of these songs came in to my life at particularly significant moments. These songs either gave me the inspiration to explore different territories musically and pursue my ambitions as a songwriter or they remind me of some of the lovely and perhaps not so lovely times i have shared with my friends and family. This playlist goes right back to when I’d listen to blues with my dad as a child, right up to the most recent songs I’ve got in to.” – Rhodes

Bear’s Den: My Influences

Heralded U.K. trio Bear’s Den offer their Beatnik Guest Mix.

We first fell in love with the London-based folk band after hearing their debut Agape EP back in 2013.
Without/Within is their second EP from 2014 which boasted the wonderful ‘Sahara’. And more recently they took our breath away with the incredible ‘Elysium’. A track backed by three live recordings of tracks from previous EPs Agape and Without/Within (‘Don’t Let The Sun Steal You Away’, ‘Isaac’ and ‘Sophie’, all recorded live at the Brixton Electric on 13th May 2014).

Their blend of folk is warm and heartfelt yet still adventurous and different enough to stand out from their peers.
This is one of the reasons they have shot to fantastic success after just two years, without a debut album to speak off. They have built a fervent fanbase through their live shows and a dedicated DIY aesthetic that originally saw them self-fund tours and sell hand printed CDs direct to fans at gigs. In two short years, Andrew, Joey and Kev quietly went from pub shows to a jaw dropping headline gig at the Brixton Electric and supporting Mumford & Sons and Daughter.

For their exclusive Beatnik mix, Bear’s Den have put together a fantastic collection of their wide ranging musical influences. Which includes many bands we obsess about here at Beatnik.

“Here’s a mix of songs by artists that have influenced one or all of us in Bear’s Den. There are great memories associated with most of these tracks, good times on the road, great friendships forged.” – Bear’s Den

Matatabi: My Influences

This week we welcome Matatabi to the Beatnik guest mix series.

Born December 1990 in Tokyo Japan, the enigmatic Matatabi grew up listening to vast collections of obscure underground Hip Hop records. This early exposure has seen him become a prominent figure in Japan’s rapidly growing beat scene. Something we have a bit of a soft spot here at Beatnik.

For his exclusive Beatnik mix, Matatabi has put together a collection of jazz and hip hop that have influenced his mellow dusty sound.

“Most of the songs on this mix are laidback, with some of the hip hop and jazz fusion records I listen to alot. Listeners will hear smooth sounds all the way from Japan to Germany.” – Matatabi

Mombi: My Influences

The wonderful Mombi offer their Beatnik Guest Mix.

The ambient electronic folk trio from Colorado have an arresting open and precise sound that we love here at Beatnik, with layers and layers of deep textures to excite.

The material on their gorgeous release, Turning Witch EP, was honed and sculpted while playing live, and has a louder, and more dynamic feel than any of their previous work.

When we were putting this mix together and listening to the songs herein, we immediately wanted to write some music. These songs inspire us to chase that next stark melody. We can only be so lucky if you can hear the echoes of some of these tracks in the fibers of the Mombi sound.” – Mombi

Phoria: My Influences

The brilliant Phoria offer their Beatnik Guest Mix.

The British five-piece band make sultry music, crafting a breathtaking blend of whisper-like vocals and euphoric electronics. Their first EP, Bloodworks with the stunning single ‘Red’ catapulted them to the band of the moment. This year they have returned with their highly awaited Display EP, dropping on exciting new indie X Novo.

They have united critics in praise of their music, and recently Gold Flake Paint put it best:’To say there’s nobody quite like them sounds like something of a misnomer, but with each track the band are carving out a spot on the map that is strikingly their own.’

For their exclusive Beatnik mix the Phoria share their influences,

“Here’s a small collection of songs that really makes me put the BASS FACE or put me into a nice mellow place. Some of these artists have influenced us massively, some of these artists are very new, who I just love at the moment. (I had to put Jon Hopkins in there, my love and respect for that man is over the top.) Hope you enjoy it!” Seryn from Phoria

Khushi: My Influences

This week we’re excited to welcome Khushi to the ranks of Beatnik guest mixers.

Khushi has taken 2014 under his wing with his alternative sound. With the Phantoms EP and ‘Magpie’ single getting great response he is set to be going places.

For his exclusive influence mix, Khushi has put together one of the most eclectic mixes we’ve ever had here at Beatnik and its chock full of musical goodness.

“Here is a collection of tracks that grabbed me as soon as I heard them and stayed with me as influences or inspirations. Some of them are ones that have shaped my approach to music over the last few years, others are oldies that will always have a place in my heart. Looking back at the list it is a pretty incongruous collection, so apologies if it leaves anyone with a sense of musical sea-sickness!”
